Jussi Heinonen

Director, Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), Finland

Mr. Heinonen is a Finnish safety regulator with extensive experience in the nuclear fuel cycle, particularly in the regulation of radioactive waste management and disposal. He holds a Master of Science degree in Material Sciences. Since 2020, he has been leading strategic development at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK), where his responsibilities include the renewal of the Nuclear Energy Act and related regulations as well as STUK’s strategy and the advancement of knowledge-based and customer-oriented regulatory processes.

Jussi Heinonen, STUK

Before his current position, Mr. Heinonen spent nearly two decades overseeing Finnish nuclear fuel cycle facilities. His work has covered waste management, spent fuel interim storages, and Posiva’s spent fuel disposal programme. He has also actively represented Finland in international cooperation through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), and the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG).
